Awareness Month

Functional Medicine's unique approach to treating dementia offers hope

Functional medicine is a practice that works to restore optimal health by addressing the root cause of disease. Doctors take a holistic look at each person’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors to create an individualized treatment plan. This same approach is used by Functional Medicine physicians such as Dr. Bargas when treating patients with Alzheimer's and others suffering from cognitive decline.

New studies have shown the effectiveness of this Functional Medicine approach. Research shows that
exercise is one of the strategies that has been shown to optimize both mitochondrial and cognitive function, potentially decelerating cognitive decline and attenuating neurodegeneration.

Another recently published study  assessed lifestyle factors to determine their contributions to cognitive function later in life. The authors conclude that there might be a cumulative effect of small incremental improvements across a wide range of lifestyle factors. For patients concerned about cognitive decline, the additive effect of multiple healthy interventions may be the best approach. Importantly, cognitive training may transfer to mitigating physical decline over time. These treatments are not only cost effective, they have few negative side effects.

Finally, Dr. Dale Bredeson, professor of neurology at the Easton Laboratories for Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, has done extensive research on ways to reduce cognitive decline. He provides a great summary of his work here.

"I often ask my patients to picture Alzheimer’s as a roof with 30 holes in it  The approach of conventional medicine-- treating exclusively  with pharmaceuticals-- is like plugging one or two holes only," said Dr. Bargas. "The Functional Medicine approach, on the other hand, works to identify and repair all the holes."

Taking just 4,500 steps each day may help you live longer

A new study suggests that taking more steps per day can help you live longer. Moreover, researchers say it doesn’t matter if you take them all at once or in short spurts, just getting those steps in can lower the risk of premature death.

The study, involving more than 16,000 women over the age of 60, also suggests that 4,500 steps per day is enough to help extend the human lifespan. In comparison to taking no steps at all, researchers find each additional 1,000 steps contributes to a 28 percent decrease in death among study participants.

Food First: Dietary Change Improves Outcomes

The idea behind a “food first” approach is that patients with chronic complaints who change their diet first, before trying pharmaceuticals, or perhaps even nutraceuticals, often see dramatic improvements in their health. For example, whole-food, plant-based diets have been associated with weight loss, a lower prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, and a reduced risk of heart disease. A recent meta-analysis found a significant protective effect of a vegan diet (where all animal products are excluded) in the incidence of total cancer. Moreover, studies suggest that a plant-based diet may be beneficial in the treatment of some chronic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis.

This approach does not suggest that food can help every patient, nor that dietary changes alone are all that is needed to bring patients to wellness. Instead, it encapsulates the idea that changing eating habits can be an effective first step for many patients—and the improvements that they experience can serve as empowering feedback, motivating them to make other needed lifestyle changes.

Is Functional Medicine or Integrative Cardiology
right for you?

Conventional medicine is good at putting patients in a box and labeling a set of signs and symptoms with a diagnosis that is most often treated with pharmaceuticals. Functional medicine, on the other hand, is about thinking outside the box to reverse dysfunctional health processes.

Would you rather take pharmaceuticals for the rest of your life, or get to a point where you might not need them at all?
